Mr. Simon C Hawkins MBChB MS MMEd FRCS Simon is a dedicated Consultant Oncoplastic & Cosmetic Breast Surgeon whose practice concentrates exclusively on the management of benign and malignant breast conditions and cosmetic breast surgery. He works in the NHS as the lead consultant breast surgeon at Great Western Hospitals NHS foundation trust in Swindon and lives near Marlborough, Wiltshire with his wife and two sons. He graduated from The University of Manchester in 2001 (MBChB) and completed his general surgery training in the South of England spending over 4 years of his advanced surgical rotation in Oncoplastic Breast Surgical Units gaining a deep understanding of therapeutic and reconstructive surgery. He was awarded an Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship following his completion of training in 2013. He was one of the first surgeons in the UK to successfully complete the Master of Surgery degree (MS) in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery from the UEA with merit. This award winning degree programme was developed with the support of The Royal College of Surgeons, The Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) and BAPRAS. He has a wide range of publications, international presentations and prizes in surgery and has further interests in the training of future surgeons following his appointment as a honorary lecturer at the University of Bristol during which he obtained his MMEd (Master of Education degree) with distinction and was made a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He was awarded a fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2012 (FRCS) and is a full member of the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS). He is also a fully accredited cosmetic surgeon through the Royal College of Surgeons Cosmetic Surgery Accreditation Scheme. |
He has extensive expertise in the combined use of general and plastic surgical techniques for the full range of benign and malignant breast conditions. These include oncoplastic breast conservation including Therapeutic Mammoplasty (using breast reduction surgery to remove breast cancers) and Chest Wall Perforator Flap Procedures (e.g. LICAP, LTAP and AICAP flaps) to avoid the need for mastectomy where possible. Where Mastectomy is recommended he offers the full range of breast reconstruction techniques (both implant and flap based reconstruction). He personally led the introduction of Acellular Dermal Matrix (ARTIA) based reconstruction to Swindon and Wiltshire, with the aim of improving outcomes from implant based breast reconstruction. In addition he also offers Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and targeted axillary dissection (TAD) alongside other axillary (armpit) surgical procedures.
He also has a particular interest in the challenging field of congenital breast asymmetry correction and cosmetic breast surgery and has a wide range of techniques at his disposal to obtain the best outcomes for his patients. These include extensive experience with Breast Reduction/Uplift surgical approaches and Breast Enlargement (Augmentation) procedures
